What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever been given?

 I need to listen more

What’s your proudest career moment to date?

Anytime I’ve created something from virtually nothing.

What are your future aspirations for your Carat/iProspect/Vizeum/DAN office?

We will become the most trusted communications partner in Scotland.

If you could invite any three guests, from any time in history, to dinner, who would it be and why?

Fred, The Grandad I never got to meet. Apparently he was a legend who loved gin martinis and racing motor cars.

Steve McQueen, who I think both my Grandad and I would get on with.

And Leo the Lion - my childhood cat. I remember him being the coolest beast ever to roam the face of the Earth. The other guests would be in awe of him.

I have been the leading practitioner in the Scottish media agency market for close to two decades, having successfully built the biggest independent agency in the market - MediaVision - before it's acquisition by leading global communications group, Dentsu Aegis Network, and subsequently highly successful merger with Carat Edinburgh.  Currently Chairman of the enlarged Carat business, my passion for delivering a combination of world-class client service with innovative, commercially effective media communications plans for my clients burns as brightly as ever.

I’m privileged to work with some outstanding client companies, and to have a helicopter view of the commercial and operational challenges they face. Helping them to unlock some of the answers to those challenges via intelligent use of media is perhaps the most satisfying part of my role. That, and working with a fantastic group of media professionals within the DAN businesses in Scotland, the UK and Internationally.

Outside of work, my passions include both travel – with Burma and Brazil amongst my favourite recent destinations, and working within the broader Scottish business community to promote learning and development, and both charitable and philanthropic causes.

I lead Client management across Retail, F&B, Travel, Medical and Charity sectors.  Client Centricity sits at the heart of my day to day output to focus my team to deliver the very best service to our Clients and through collaboration ensure their business is at the forefront of cutting edge technology and delivery of pioneering media campaigns.

Carat has a passion for media! I enjoy the opportunity to share this with our Clients and to provide them business solutions to grow their Brands. Plus, being part of the fastest growing global media group means having access to a diverse and talented group of leading media practitioners. We work in collaboration and drive to always deliver the best in practice media solutions.

My parents both had distinguished careers over three decades in Agency Buyer and TV sales roles. Although at an early age I didn’t plan to forge a career in this industry, there was a hereditary path that provided me the opportunity to begin my work life in this sector. I started in Commercial Radio Sales before moving across to Media Agency side in the late 90’s.

A piece of advice… never burn bridges! The Media Industry is ever changing but the relationships you build across Clients and Colleagues will almost always return to you at some stage in your Career.

How do you like to spend your time out of the office?

Away from the office, I am married and have one daughter. At nearly 4, she keeps me on my toes, whether that is Play Park Climbing, Scooter trips or simply ensuring the latest episodes of Peppa Pig are available to view! I try to escape for a ‘good walk’ around the golf course and where possible follow the mighty Norwich City, aka Pride of East Anglia.

I lead the Client Service team responsible for all Scottish Government and Framework Partners. This includes clients such as VisitScotland, Skills Development Scotland, CalMac, Scottish Development International as well as core Government. My role is to develop award winning communications strategies by collaborating with other DAN brands across the network, manage all commercial elements across my client base and lead and develop my team to service our clients to the highest standards. I enjoy the fast-moving pace and especially the people – both colleagues and clients.

I love the diversity of working at DAN and the ability to access our huge network of specialist capability across a range of brands. This allows me to offer a real specialist and expert service to my clients. I also love working with our international audiences to launch campaigns across the globe. A great example of this has been our recent launch in New York and San Francisco for Scotland Is Now which is a collaborative brand campaign between VisitScotland, SDI and Scottish Government. Working with DAN brands in the United States has been a pleasure and brings local and valued expertise to my clients who need to target consumers overseas.

I began my career in media 18 years ago. Immediately after graduating I joined Feather Brooksbank (which became Carat many years later) as a Media Executive working across a range of consumer and B2B brands. In those days, digital media was in its infancy and I focused on planning and buying traditional channels including TV, Radio, Press and OOH. I have seen the media industry completely transform in this time and now 90% of what I do for my clients is digital focused.

Helping to guide my clients through the fast moving digital economy by drawing on the considerable talent of people who work for various DAN brands really excites me.

What’s your party trick?

Cartwheeling.

I work in a client services team here, servicing a numbers of clients as varied and diverse as Barrhead Travel, Amplifon and Media Scotland. The amount of client contact we have is great, so we can really get under the client’s metaphorical bonnet and truly understand their business needs day to day.

It’s great working as part of the Dentsu Aegis Network and if you are talking about the Edinburgh office, I enjoy working with my colleagues and that’s across all the brands we have here.

I started working in the media back in 1997 as a media assistant in a full service agency. At that time the job involved booking dozens and dozens of regional press titles that don’t even exist anymore. I really enjoy the fact that we always find out about stuff first and I’m really proud that I got to celebrate my twentieth work anniversary last year.

If you could invite any three guests, from any time in history, to dinner, who would it be and why?

Lauren Bacall, Shirley Williams and Rosa Luxemburg. As the world would have been a far better place if they had all achieved their full potential.

Client services is at the heart of what I do. My team works specifically across a broad spectrum of Scottish Government related awareness and behavioural change campaigns ranging from Animal Welfare to Organ Donation and Teacher Recruitment to Parenting.

We work closely with the marketing teams and creative / digital / field / partnership / PR agencies to produce effective media strategies and campaigns that deliver results.

Being part of Carat, is being part of a brand that is ever evolving and has given me many opportunities to develop and grow across the 21 years I have worked here.  I work with many exceptional people and continue to learn from my colleagues every day.  I’m also extremely proud to be part of the global DAN brand, which gives us access to industry leading specialist brands and talent.

What’s the best piece of career advice you’ve ever been given?

Be respectful to people – the media industry is a small one, so you never know where people will turn up in the ever changing media landscape….

What’s your proudest career moment to date?

Winning a Marketing Star Gold Award for the Scottish Government Litter campaign

How do you like to spend your time out of the office?

I love spending time with my family and friends, being a taxi for my daughter, being a footie / basketball mum and the occasional vdc 😊

In Strategy we look under the bonnet to ensure we’re using insight and prior experience to get the most out of a brief. We are likely to interrogate you. Sorry. The more information we have about what you’re trying to achieve the better. Once we have background, context and – most importantly – objectives, we can put together a plan of action that gives you the best chance of success.

We work across the group so there’s never a dull day. As we’re working on such varied projects we’re constantly learning and it keeps us on our toes. Within the group we have experts in such a variety of fields – you can learn so much from others. If you collaborate with the right people you can get the best work done.

I began my career in media by (quite typically of me) getting lured to a graduate recruitment night by a promise of beer and pizza… proving the value of knowing your audience! My proudest career moment to date is being invited to Mountain View when working in Australia – I was invited as part of the GM marketing / agency team to discuss the latest developments at Google and to define the opportunity and strategy for the car brand in 2014. I didn’t just love it for the chance to snoop around the Googleplex, and for all the free food on offer... the best bit was so many different providers coming together to discuss what was next. There’s a lot to be said for asking for experience in different fields to open your eyes to other stuff.

Out of the office I try to achieve a balance between the healthy and the unhealthy. I love a good run. But then I also love a good pint.

Insights and Strategy Manager

Show Bio Hide Bio

I work alongside our Strategy Directors in supporting the wider business to plan and implement campaigns. Working across all Edinburgh Dentsu Clients, I specialise in “insights”, pulling key information to assist with planning. Using industry tools such as CCS, YouGov, IPA Touchpoints and Neilsen Addynamix, my role is to understand more about target audiences’ behaviour as well as consumer and industry trends. Alongside this, I am trained in Experian’s Mosaic profiling application and frequently profile client’s customer databases.

Having recently moved roles, I am frequently working with the other DAN North offices, which is something I really enjoy. Over the past 4 months, I have built up several contacts across Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle which has opened opportunities to work on other brands.

Working at DAN, as part of a large international agency, there are a lot of available opportunities, including training, internal moves and meeting so many different people.

I studied Media for A-Level and it was something that I enjoyed so I went on to study Media, Communications and Cultural Studies at Newcastle University. My first job out of University was a Junior Account Executive for the Leaflet Company in London. I then went on to be a planner/buyer within a small London agency. Both allowed me to explore different areas of the industry which helped me in my decision to move to Edinburgh and become a Manager for DAN.

What’s your proudest career moment to date?

My proudest career moment so far… completing my IPA Advanced Certificate with a credit.

What’s your party trick?

I can do the worm…
