Twitter introduce a new targeting capability based on app downloads

In recent weeks we have told you about the latest updates in the paid social media world. Instagram have introduced carousel and action orientated formats and have also increased their targeting capabilities. Pinterest have included a ‘buy now’ button. This week, we have a Twitter update for you:

Advertisers can now show their ads based on apps users have previously downloaded. The new tool is called “installed app category targeting” and will allow brands to target their ads at users who have downloaded similar apps to their own. Using Twitter insight they can also target apps that people are likely to be interested in.

Twitter’s project manager for revenue, Deepak Rao explained all in the blog post:

“For example, an advertiser who wants to drive installs of a task management app can select the “Productivity” category to reach users who have recently installed similar apps. That same advertiser may know that productivity app users also tend to use finance apps, so they can target the “Finance” category to connect with new people who are likely to be interested in their app.”

Apple Pay to launch in the UK

As of next month Apple Pay will be available in the UK in over 250,000 locations. You will need either an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus or an Apple Watch to make purchases with Apple Pay.

Transport for London, Boots, BP, Costa Coffee, Marks & Spencer and McDonald’s are some of the brands making up an “exclusive group of early adopters”. The tool is simple to use; you enter your debit or credit card details into the app then hold the iPhone near the contactless reader, whilst holding the Touch ID.

In-app shopping will also be streamlined, with  a variety of apps such as and Air BnB and Argos letting users pay with the touch of a finger – on iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3.

“Apple Pay has quickly become a big part of millions of users’ everyday shopping routines, providing a simpler, faster and more secure way to pay,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services.

“We’re thrilled to bring Apple Pay to the UK with support at launch from the most popular banks, an incredible roster of merchants and many of our users’ favourite apps.”

Download to be the first UK festival to go cashless

We are increasingly moving towards a cashless society, with people using NFC technology to pay on the tube as well as in retailers.

Next weekend the biggest rock festival in the UK Download is adopting RFID dog tag technology built into the festival wristbands to allow people to make payments.

‘The wristband chip holds information including the access control permission as per the ticket type bought and how much money festival goers have pre-loaded onto their account to spend around the event’.

Users will be able to top up at on-site stations where you can add funds using your debit or credit card, or you can update on their website using the festival’s free Wi-Fi.

‘The festival website said that the decision to use RFID comes after five years of "learning, development and improvements that have now given us the confidence to make the move to implement RFID technology".

Usage of Snapchat amongst Teens Varies Across Europe

Much has been written about the penetration of Snapchat amongst teens, however the latest results from GlobalWebIndex shows that Ireland has the highest update at 52%, with Spain coming in at the lowest at 22%.

These results generally reflect social media usage in the different countries and how frequently teens use it by country. 

This is very useful data for brands who want to speak to teenagers in different markets and how you may want to re-think your strategies accordingly.
