New data released by Zapp and the Centre of Economics and Business Research has revealed that "more than a fifth of all UK online shopping sales now take place during people’s daily commutes".
This equates to L9.3bn, with your average commuter spending L36 per week, and for London commuters this weekly average rises to L44. London commuters are more likely to purchase whilst commuting, with nearly two-thirds of the total spend (L5.9 billion) being spent by them.
This spike is due to the penetration of 4G in the UK and the ongoing efforts for WiFi to be offered free in majority of urban areas, including most public transport stations or vehicles.
But what are people buying?
"Clothing tops the shopping lists of most commuters: almost three quarters of Brits (71%) commuting via public transport report that they purchase clothing online during their commute on an average week.
"Entertainment media are the next two most popular items, with 68% paying for digital downloads during their commute on an average week, and 65% spending on other entertainment media. Groceries (62%) and takeaways (60%) also featured highly."
Why are they buying on the go?
"The most popular reason for shopping online whilst commuting is ‘just to pass the time’, followed by it being the most convenient time to shop. Many busy professionals are also taking advantage of the ‘click and collect’ services which allow them to pick up their goods later."
This is a huge space for brands to play in. Our clients need to ensure that their sites automatically recognise which device (smartphone, laptop or table) people are trying to access their website or app from, in order to render correctly and allow for a great consumer experience.

Turkish Airlines used Periscope to film a behind-the-scenes flight experience from Istanbul to New York. The airline showcased cabin crew, flight lounges, pre-flight checks, inflight service, the crew and the pilots hard at work. Click here to see the video highlights and social results
Overall the airline received 5000 new followers, 292,000 likes and some valuable PR, due reward for experimenting with the latest media innovation.

Reports suggest that Facebook is set to join Spotify and Apple by launching its own music streaming service. The music site Music Ally reports that the move is part of a wider strategy, designed to monetise music videos.
“It’s a mass land grab. Facebook going into the video space was always going to be an enormous, ambitious land grab and no doubt something they’ve been planning for some time as the potential income from ad revenue will be incredible,” one source told Music Ally.
Facebook is one of the leading global brands and it must come as no surprise that they want to enter an industry that continues to grow rapidly. For the first time revenues from digital music services are set to outpace those from physical, according to IFPI’s Digital Music Report. Facebook has refused to comment on reports and no date has been announced for the official launch.

A new report called An App Is Not Enough by AppDynamics
shows that the expectations of digital native shoppers are telling brands how, when and where they purchase from.
Interesting findings from the report show: "Over two-thirds of consumers state that the performance of a mobile app impacts their perception of a retailer. The report also finds that 67% of consumers would be put off shopping with a retailer if they had a negative experience of an app."
The report also says: "20% of those surveyed admitted to making purchases on their phone whist at work in front of their computer."
These findings really put the pressure on brands to deliver a flawless mobile user experience if they want to drive sales.
