With the prospect of an industry-wide skills shortage threatening the future of the industry we decided that we needed to excite and enthuse teenagers about a career in media, to make sure the talent pool was full enough to drive Carat (and the industry) to greater success in the future.
To achieve this we created Discover Media, an immersion day aimed at 15-year-old GCSE students from a local school. Through a number of talks from the likes of adidas and Facebook, a live brief with a presentation to senior staff and tech try outs of Google Glass and Oculus Rift we educated three sets of young hopefuls about life in a media agency – one of whom was even employed by our sister agency iProspect.
Jonathan, a student at Midhurst Rother College, said: “The experience was amazing; it has given me a lot of confidence in performing in front of a variety of different people. I also learned that the media advertising industry is amazing, the offices at Carat are lovely, and so are the people I came into contact with."
“Today I had my business exam and I did brilliantly so after the trip my memory is full of new ideas. Carat has really opened my mind up into the world of work and I will definitely be taking this as an opportunity. I was thinking about a sports related job but this experience has opened a lot of different doors, this being one.”
This year sees the launch of Discover Media Advanced. A mentoring scheme aimed at the A-Level students of a local school, Regent High, which will result in three school leavers being given one year Apprenticeships at Carat.
