Big wins for Digital Radio, Magic & Kiss in the new radio RAJAR results - our top line analysis

Radio has come a long way since the first commercial broadcast back in 1920. 95 years on, radio has evolved significantly digitally and has also diversified from standard spot to sponsorships, partnerships, in-stream and live reads.

Radio has come a long way since the first commercial broadcast back in 1920.  95 years on, radio has evolved significantly digitally and has also diversified from standard spot to sponsorships, partnerships, in-stream and live reads.

Key highlights from Q1 RAJAR 2015:

  • 47.8m (89%) of the population tune into radio every week for an average of 21.3 hours.
  • Commercial share has increased year on year from 42% to 43%.
  • Digital radio continues to grow its weekly reach with 54% of the UK tuning into radio weekly through a digital platform.
  • This is driven by DAB radios (+6% yoy) and online (+5% yoy) rather than DTV which is actually down yoy (-5%).
  • Listening via a digital platform is at its highest ever % with 40% of total radio hours coming from these platforms.
  • In London, digital listening now takes a higher share of listening than AM/FM.
  • Magic announced its 1st results for its National network – an impressive 3.6m weekly listeners.
  • Within this Magic 105.4 has jumped up to be No.1 in London for reach, with 1.91m weekly listeners, and market share.
  • Kiss London now has the No.1 breakfast show in London, jumping ahead of Capital for the 1st time.
  • There’s been huge year on year growth for the biggest digital only stations; Absolute 80’s +36.2%, Kisstory +21.2%, Planet Rock +16.1%, Heat +15.6% & BBC6 Music +7.1%.
  • Great results from some of the commercial stalwarts – Kiss Network up to 6.1m, Absolute Network up to 4.83m, talkSPORT up to 3.2m, LBC up to 1.36m.
